Wireless Coverage & Cell Towers

What is your position on cell towers and improving wireless coverage in Mendota Heights?

John's Answer

Reliable cell coverage is important, particularly for public safety. As Fire Chief for 32 years, I saw firsthand how important dependable communications are in an emergency. At the same time, improving wireless service should not come at the expense of the character of our neighborhoods and parks.

I voted against the cell tower proposed for Wentworth Park. I was initially open to the proposal because I knew residents had concerns about poor cellular coverage. After listening to residents, however, I concluded that we needed to take a broader look at the problem before deciding on a particular solution.

I support a moratorium on new cell tower proposals while the City hires an independent consultant to conduct a citywide evaluation of wireless coverage, identify where service problems actually exist, and evaluate available technologies and alternatives.

Wireless technology continues to change, and the City should not assume that a traditional cell tower in a particular location is the best answer. We should first understand our needs, consider the alternatives, involve residents, and then make decisions based on independent data and good planning.
